Singh out for three weeks after surgery

Vijay Singh will miss the next three weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Singh, the defending FedEx Cup champion, had the surgery yesterday.

Singh, who turns 46 next month, expects to return for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which begins on February 9.

“The doctor says I’ll be on crutches for a few days, and then I’ll be OK,” said Singh, who finished 27th at the season opening Mercedes-Benz Championship last week.

“I don’t consider this a big setback or anything. I think the knee will be much stronger in the long run and it is certainly better that it happened now compared to the middle of the season.”

Singh won three tournaments on his way to the 2008 FedEx Cup Championship last season.

The Fijian has 56 career victories, and last season became only the second player in PGA Tour history to reach $60m in career earnings.
